Stand up Speak out collaborates with the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. As a program we all work collectively in order to create art together. Throughout the semester our Stand Up Speak out class was able to explore various themes that became the outlet of our creativity.
As an artist I admire the art of visual storytelling. From creating art as a director, cinematographer, and film editor I was able to expand on my skill set. As an artist I enjoy making experimental films and exploring different aesthetics and genres. My films explore the truth about our world through an artistic lens.
Our first theme from the class was how Grecian urns act as talking vases, as a class every student had to take either a memory or cautionary tale. For our second project we worked as a class to create a film centered around the mythology of “Ode to Clotho”, the end result was beautiful, a power piece about female empowerment. Our final project as a class was to film and edit together a choreographed dance of Beyoncé’s “Cozy” from our own Marymount Manhattan dance class.
My talking vase is in the form of a short film. A Rose Is about a girl who is closed off to the idea of love and until she opens herself up she realizes how much it transformed her. Love is the root to all things. Love makes you see the world differently and once you learn to love, you are able to spread it to everyone and everything.
A woman fighting against societal oppression and expectations finds her inner strength and power to break free. This film explores what it is like for women to be brought down by others based on societal standards of what is beauty.
As a crew member of Ode to Clotho, I worked as a Co Director and worked in post production to assemble the project.
This performance was based on Beyoncé’s “Cozy”. Dancers from Marymount Manhattan College were able to create solos to this song using inspiration from Embodied Africanist Aesthetics.
On this project, I was able to film using one of the cameras on this project. I was able to operate the camera using a gimbal to capture the wide shot of the dancers' individual solos.
